Summer Travel Tips

Summer is finally here and it’s time to do some sightseeing, get together with family or simply relax at the beach or mountains.  Some planning ahead can make for a more carefree trip, especially if you plan to be away for an extended period.  Some of these tasks are helpful to do anytime and others are particularly important if you will be away from home.

Make copies of all the cards in your wallet, such as credit cards, medical cards, or any other frequently used cards.  Be sure to copy both sides because the customer service number is generally on the back of the card.  Should the card be lost or stolen, the account number and toll free phone number will be handy.

Before planning a trip, check on the status of any frequent flier miles to see if there are miles that can be redeemed.  Be sure to use the miles before the expiration date.  Also check on the status of any hotel rewards.  When making reservations, confirm that your rewards account will receive proper credit.

If you are traveling abroad, call the credit card issuer to inform them that you will be using the card outside the US.  Otherwise, the issuer may suspect fraud and decline foreign transactions.

If you usually store items in a safe deposit box, return the items to the safe deposit box before you leave.  Another precaution is to put your jewelry box and any cash in a remote location, such as an attic or basement.  Just remember where you put it. Keep in in mind that it is never a good idea to keep too much cash in the house at any time.

Have a neighbor or friend check on your house if you will be away for an extended period.  No one wants to come home to a flooded basement or a burst pipe and water flowing in the house.  The sooner a problem is detected, the lower the repair bill.

           Bon Voyage!
